M/S PolstjernaM/S Polstjerna is a preserved sealing vessel built in 1949. M/S Polstjerna is one of the last in its class to be built and is by far the best preserved vessel that has taken part in seal hunting.Through the years the vessel has undergone some limited rebuilding, whereof the replacement of the wheelhouse in 1975 was the biggest project. However, much of the original materials are preserved. The entire interior fittings above and below deck are original and the vessel is seen as extremely authentic. The main engine was originally a 300 HP Crossley, this was replaced by a 400 HP Wichmann in 1964. The original auxiliary engine is still in place, as is the original sailing rig, the small hunting boats, doors and windows and the teak panelling in the wheelhouse, and a large number of fittings. M/S "Polstjerna" has sailed for 33 hunting seasons and the ship has brought home approx. 100,000 seals from the western and eastern ice fields. M/S "Polstjerna" has also been used in connection with a number of polar expeditions. The last year the ship was used for sealing was 1981, and it was taken over the same year by the Arctic Society, with a view to preserving the ship as a museum vessel. M/S "Polstjerna" has been used since 1982 as a reserve vessel and for tourist trips, but is now suffering from rot and wood-boring crustaceans and has to be taken on land and in shelter for final preservation. ![]() The vessel is 28.36 metres in length, and 7.04 metres wide. Tonnage 129 BRT, and a deep draught of 2.5 metres fore and 4.0 metres aft. Mast height 19 metres from the water line. According to a review by the Norwegian maritime museum, the ship is one of the country's most valuable historic vessels and the Directorate for Cultural Heritage has given M/S "Polstjerna" protected status. Opening times Polstjerna is closed during summer of 2009 due to repairs. Admission/ticket prices (Note: free admission for visitors holding valid ticket from Polaria):
